The Chrysler Building has fascinated me since I first visited New York as an art student. Its distinctive architecture, soaring presence and position within the movement of Manhattan have stayed with me for decades.In this contemporary urban landscape painting, I wanted to capture the contrast between the stillness and elegance of the Chrysler Building and the constant movement of New York City around it.
 
Rather than creating a literal architectural representation, I use expressive marks, bold colour, movement and negative space to evoke the energy and atmosphere of the city.My approach comes from urban sketching, where working quickly and instinctively is more important than reproducing every detail. The result is an expressive interpretation of the Chrysler Building and Manhattan, a painting about the memory and feeling of New York as much as the architecture itself.
